Humanitarian Update No. 31

Reporting period: from 19 to 25 October 2020

          Coronavirus cases: 5408                  Active cases: 3386           Recovered: 1753            Deaths: 269 [1]

Highlights

  • Health Ministry announced on Sunday 25 Oct, that 49 new Coronavirus cases were registered in Syria, and that 31 patients have recovered while 2 others have passed away. That's rise the total number of infections registered till now to reach at 5408, out of which 1753 ones have recovered while 269 others have passed away.[2]

  • 5408 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported by the Syrian MoH : 1616 in Damascus; 1235 in Aleppo; 649 in Homs; 552 in Rural Damascus; 491 in Lattakia; 239 in Tartous; 175 in Hama; 167 in As-Sweida; 138 in Dar’a; 88 in Quneitra 35 in Al-Hasakeh; 16 in Deir-Ez-Zor and 7 in Ar-Raqqa .

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 8.8 tonnes of pmedical supplies to Syria to aid the country’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, included personal protection gear for health workers as well as medications and other medical equipment.[3]

  • The precautionary measures adopted in Syrian schools to limit the spread of coronavirus pandemic were discussed by Education Minister , WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean , WHO Representative to Syria,  and the accompanying delegation.[4]

  • Government hospitals in Rural Damascus and Hama governorates (Qatana, Al-Zabadani,Masyaf, Salamiyah, Suqaylabiyah and Hama National Hospitals) took recently many additional preventive measures as part of the Ministry of Health campaign to strengthen measures to protect health workers, including the distribution of protective clothing and personal protection equipment for health workers, granting seasonal influenza vaccinations to them, and conducting a test to detect Corona virus antibodies in the blood for staff who work in contact with patients And the suspected cases.[5]

  • The Syrian Football Association decides to allow fans to enter the Syrian stadiums during the local competitions, at 40% of the stadium’s capacity, with an emphasis on preserving the spatial distancing  in the stands and the precautionary measures issued by the Ministry of Health.[6]

Lebanon: COVID-19

Humanitarian Update No. 28

Reporting period: from 20 to 27 October 2020

Coronavirus cases: 71,390          Deaths: 565          Recovered: 34,803

 

Highlights

  • During this reporting period, Lebanon registered an average of 1409 new cases per day.

  • More areas in Lebanon were subjected to lockdown, as cases continue to be reported at high numbers.

  • Next week, new measures are rumored to take effect in cities to deter the spread of the virus.

Updated Measures

  • The Ministry of Interior and Municipalities issued Decision No. 1326 on 10/21/2020 to amend Decision No. 1258 regarding the continued closure of some villages and towns due to the high number of corona infections in them, based on the recommendations of the small committee of the Committee for Follow-up of Measures and Preventive Measures of Coronavirus.

  • The Ministry of Education and Higher Education issued Decision No. 498 / M / 2020 on 10/23/2020, which provides for the amendment of Decision No. 463 / M / 2020 on 10/9/2020 so that teaching begins in kindergartens in kindergartens and schools in formal education for the academic year 2020-2021, on Monday 11/2/2020 instead of Monday 10/26/2020.

  • The Governor of Mount Lebanon issued Decree No. 353/2020 on 10/23/2020 regarding the extension of the emergency measures decision related to limiting the spread of the Corona virus in the town of Bayssour - Aley District.

 Preparedness and response

  • The Ministry of Public Health is discussing with the Russian embassy in Lebanon strengthening cooperation between the ministries of health in the two countries in facing Corona, and Lebanon's interest in obtaining the Russian vaccine after its approval by the World Health Organization.

  • The Minister of Public Health in the caretaker government, Dr. Hamad Hassan, inaugurated a new COVID-19 patient ward at the Ragheb Harb hospital.

  • The Minister of Public Health in the caretaker government, Dr. Hamad Hassan, held a meeting to discuss the quantities of medicine in warehouses which are sufficient for the end of the year. Also, the minister insisted that he will not allow pharmacies or medical distributors to manipulate prices.
